What Is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is a specialised branch of dentistry focused on surgical procedures involving the oral and maxillofacial regions. These procedures address complex dental issues such as impacted teeth, jaw disorders, facial trauma, and corrective surgeries. Oral surgery encompasses a range of interventions, from tooth extractions and dental implant placements to corrective jaw surgeries and the treatment of oral pathology. The goal is to enhance oral function, alleviate pain, and improve the overall health and aesthetics of the oral and facial structures.

Who Can Benefit from Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is beneficial for individuals who:

  1. Require Tooth Extractions: Individuals with severely damaged, decayed, or impacted teeth that need extraction.
  2. Seek Dental Implants: Those looking to replace missing teeth with dental implants for a secure and permanent solution.
  3. Experience Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Individuals with impacted or problematic wisdom teeth causing pain, infection, or misalignment.
  4. Need Corrective Jaw Surgery: Individuals with jaw irregularities, such as misalignment, malocclusion, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  5. Suffer Facial Trauma: Those who have experienced facial injuries or trauma affecting the teeth, jaw, or surrounding structures.
  6. Deal with Oral Pathology: Individuals diagnosed with oral pathology conditions, including cysts, tumours, or lesions requiring surgical intervention.
  7. Undergo Pre-Prosthetic Surgery: Those needing surgical preparation for dentures, bridges, or other dental prosthetics.
  8. Seek Cosmetic Facial Procedures: Individuals interested in cosmetic facial surgeries, such as chin or cheek enhancements or facial rejuvenation.
  9. Require Bone Grafting: Those needing bone grafts to enhance the structure of the jawbone for dental implant placement.
  10. Face Sleep Apnoea Issues: Individuals with obstructive sleep apnoea may benefit from oral surgery to address airway obstructions.

What are the risks of oral surgery?

There is also a risk of damage to surrounding structures such as nerves, blood vessels, or adjacent teeth. Postoperative complications, such as swelling, bruising, or difficulty in healing, can occur. In rare cases, patients may experience prolonged numbness, altered sensation, or infection in the surgical area. It’s crucial for individuals considering oral surgery to discuss potential risks with our oral surgeon, disclose their complete medical history, and follow postoperative care instructions diligently to minimise complications and promote optimal healing.

I cannot praise Dr Crowley and the team at Molesey Dental practise enough. One year ago I was in trouble with my teeth. A mix of age and embarrassment. I finally came to the point where I had no choice but to attend. I booked my appointment and to say I received complete professionalism is a understatement. I could write many lines of praise, but will keep it simple. Please don't hesitate!!! Make an appointment, be honest and you will not be judged whatsoever. The painless processes that are applied is certainly life changing. Huge thankyou to all the team at MDP. Thankyou. I finally smile with complete confidence once again!!!!

As an emergency, I booked an appointment with Dr Sharma who went above & beyond to ensure I trusted her and was comfortable with a different dentist. She did a fantastic and efficient job replacing my filling. The reception is also very friendly and professional. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After years of not seeing a dentist due to criticisms, critiques and bad relationships with all the ones I've had prior I was sceptical going in but knew that my dental health would one day catch up to me. So I went just before I went off to university. my dentist was Dr Puneet Nagpal who was very kind and considerate after learning I haven't been for a checkup for quite some time and he went through everything very thoroughly but was gentle with the tools and his words, he wasn't condescending or patronising or putting any blame on me. He told me that I needed to have half a dozen or so fillings filled and I told him about my deadline as I was off to university by the end of the month and he was able to book me in the following week for 2 rounds of fillings. We also had other talks about personal life and how much sugar and drinks can affect my teeth and he went out of his way to google and search for things that I would like and made some suggestions. During the fillings I had to excuse my self a couple of times due to an excess of water filling my mouth and having difficulty breathing, luckily he understood gave me time to compose myself and settle back in and I was able to wear some headphones to help distract myself from the noise of the drilling and from the pain. All 3 times I went to visit him he went above and beyond any dental experience I've had before and has made me care much more about my dental hygiene even more so and has made me feel comfortable with going back to the dentists as I would dread it before. Dr Nagpal has been one of if not the kindest person who has looked after me in any sort of medical visit I've so often needed in my life, I could not recommend him enough.
