Understanding the Difference Between Conventional and Immediate Dentures

Dentures serve as a popular and effective solution for individuals dealing with missing teeth, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits. Among the various types of dentures, conventional and immediate dentures stand out as distinct options, each with its unique characteristics and advantages. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the differences between conventional and immediate dentures, exploring the key aspects of their creation, benefits, considerations, and addressing common questions associated with each type.

Conventional Dentures

Conventional dentures represent the traditional form of removable prosthetics designed to replace missing teeth. The process of obtaining conventional dentures typically involves several appointments and a multi-step procedure, providing a tried-and-true solution for individuals seeking comprehensive tooth replacement.

Key Stages in Obtaining Conventional Dentures

  1. Initial Consultation: The journey toward conventional dentures begins with an initial consultation. During this phase, the dentist evaluates the patient’s oral health, discusses treatment options, and establishes the desired outcome.
  2. Tooth Extraction (if needed): In cases where natural teeth are still present but in poor condition, extraction may be necessary to make way for the dentures. This step ensures a smooth transition to the prosthetic and optimal fit.
  3. Impressions: Precise moulds or impressions of the patient’s oral structures are taken. These impressions serve as the foundation for crafting dentures that fit snugly and comfortably in the mouth.
  4. Modelling and Wax Try-In: A wax model of the dentures is created based on the impressions. This model allows the patient and dentist to assess the fit, appearance, and alignment before the final dentures are fabricated.
  5. Final Fabrication: Once the patient approves the wax model, the final dentures are fabricated. Crafted from durable materials, such as acrylic or a combination of acrylic and metal, these dentures are designed to withstand the pressures of daily activities like eating and speaking.
  6. Fitting and Adjustments: The patient receives the final dentures, and our dentists ensure a proper fit. Adjustments may be made to address any discomfort or issues with the bite. Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor the adaptation process. Conventional and Immediate Dentures

Advantages of Conventional Dentures

1. Comprehensive Solution:

Conventional dentures provide a comprehensive solution for individuals with extensive tooth loss. They can replace an entire arch of teeth, restoring both aesthetics and functionality.

2. Customisation:

The multi-step process allows for customisation, ensuring that the dentures are tailored to the unique contours of the patient’s mouth. This customisation contributes to a comfortable fit and natural appearance.

3. Time-Tested Approach:

Conventional dentures follow a well-established and time-tested approach to tooth replacement. The thorough planning and crafting process contribute to the reliability and success of this type of denture.

Considerations with Conventional Dentures

1. Healing Time:

The process of obtaining conventional dentures involves tooth extraction, which may require a healing period before the final dentures are fitted. This healing time can vary based on individual factors.

2. Temporary Tooth Loss:

During the fabrication process, patients may experience temporary tooth loss while waiting for the final dentures. This period of adaptation may involve adjustments in speech and eating habits.

3. Multiple Appointments:

The creation of conventional dentures involves multiple appointments, including impressions, modelling, and fitting sessions. Some individuals may find the extended timeline challenging.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures offer a unique approach to tooth replacement by providing a swift solution for individuals facing imminent tooth extraction. Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are prepared in advance and can be inserted immediately after the extraction of natural teeth.

Key Stages in Obtaining Immediate Dentures

  1. Initial Consultation and Impression Taking: Similar to conventional dentures, the process begins with an initial consultation. Impressions of the patient’s mouth are taken to create a pre-fabricated set of dentures.
  2. Tooth Extraction: The necessary teeth are extracted on the same day as the immediate dentures are to be inserted. This simultaneous extraction and insertion process minimise the time without teeth.
  3. Immediate Insertion: Once the natural teeth are removed, the immediate dentures are immediately inserted into the patient’s mouth. This ensures that individuals do not experience a prolonged period without teeth.
  4. Post-Extraction Adjustments: Immediate dentures may require adjustments following the extraction of natural teeth to achieve an optimal fit. These adjustments accommodate changes in the oral tissues during the healing process.
  5. Follow-Up Appointments: Patients are scheduled for follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process, make necessary adjustments, and address any concerns.

Advantages of Immediate Dentures

1. Immediate Aesthetics:

Immediate dentures provide an immediate aesthetic solution, allowing individuals to maintain their appearance without a visible gap in their smile during the healing period.

2. Reduced Time Without Teeth:

The simultaneous extraction and insertion process minimise the time individuals spend without teeth. This quick turnaround is particularly beneficial for those concerned about the immediate aesthetic impact.

3. Adaptation to Speech and Eating Habits:

Since immediate dentures are inserted immediately after tooth extraction, individuals can adapt to speaking and eating with dentures sooner than if they were waiting for conventional dentures.

Considerations with Immediate Dentures

1. Post-Extraction Adjustments:

Immediate dentures may require adjustments after the extraction of natural teeth. Changes in the oral tissues during the healing process can affect the fit of the dentures.

2. Healing Process:

While immediate dentures offer a swift solution, the healing process after tooth extraction continues. Patients may experience changes in the jawbone and soft tissues, necessitating adjustments to ensure a proper fit.

3. Temporary Aesthetics:

While immediate dentures provide immediate aesthetics, they are considered a temporary solution. Further adjustments or a new set of dentures may be needed as the oral tissues continue to change. The difference between conventional and immediate dentures

I cannot praise Dr Crowley and the team at Molesey Dental practise enough. One year ago I was in trouble with my teeth. A mix of age and embarrassment. I finally came to the point where I had no choice but to attend. I booked my appointment and to say I received complete professionalism is a understatement. I could write many lines of praise, but will keep it simple. Please don't hesitate!!! Make an appointment, be honest and you will not be judged whatsoever. The painless processes that are applied is certainly life changing. Huge thankyou to all the team at MDP. Thankyou. I finally smile with complete confidence once again!!!!

After years of not seeing a dentist due to criticisms, critiques and bad relationships with all the ones I've had prior I was sceptical going in but knew that my dental health would one day catch up to me. So I went just before I went off to university. my dentist was Dr Puneet Nagpal who was very kind and considerate after learning I haven't been for a checkup for quite some time and he went through everything very thoroughly but was gentle with the tools and his words, he wasn't condescending or patronising or putting any blame on me. He told me that I needed to have half a dozen or so fillings filled and I told him about my deadline as I was off to university by the end of the month and he was able to book me in the following week for 2 rounds of fillings. We also had other talks about personal life and how much sugar and drinks can affect my teeth and he went out of his way to google and search for things that I would like and made some suggestions. During the fillings I had to excuse my self a couple of times due to an excess of water filling my mouth and having difficulty breathing, luckily he understood gave me time to compose myself and settle back in and I was able to wear some headphones to help distract myself from the noise of the drilling and from the pain. All 3 times I went to visit him he went above and beyond any dental experience I've had before and has made me care much more about my dental hygiene even more so and has made me feel comfortable with going back to the dentists as I would dread it before. Dr Nagpal has been one of if not the kindest person who has looked after me in any sort of medical visit I've so often needed in my life, I could not recommend him enough.
