Dental bridges are a popular and effective solution for individuals dealing with missing teeth. However, the presence of gum disease can complicate the decision-making process and raise questions about the feasibility and success of dental bridge placement. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the relationship between gum disease and dental bridges, considerations for individuals with periodontal issues, and address frequently asked questions to provide a thorough understanding of this dental dilemma.

Considering Dental Bridges with Gum Disease

1. Gingivitis vs. Periodontitis

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, progresses in two main stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the early stage characterised by inflamed and bleeding gums, often caused by plaque buildup. If left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis, where the supporting structures of the teeth, including the bone, become compromised.

2. Impact on Oral Health

Gum disease poses significant risks to oral health. It can lead to gum recession, tooth mobility, and even tooth loss. In advanced stages, the infection can affect the bone, potentially resulting in the need for more extensive dental procedures. Dental bridge and gum disease

Dental Bridges and Gum Disease

1. Candidacy Assessment

Before recommending a dental bridge, a dentist assesses the patient’s oral health. Individuals with gum disease may still be eligible for a bridge, but the severity of the condition influences the treatment approach.

2. Periodontal Treatment

Addressing gum disease is a priority before considering a dental bridge. Periodontal treatment, such as scaling and root planing, may be necessary to reduce inflammation and infection. This step aims to create a healthier environment for successful bridge placement.

3. Stability of Adjacent Teeth

Dental bridges rely on the support of adjacent teeth, which should be stable and healthy. If gum disease has compromised the integrity of these teeth, additional interventions may be needed to restore stability.

Considerations for Getting a Dental Bridge with Gum Disease

1. Disease Control

Controlling gum disease is paramount. Successful treatment and management of periodontal issues are crucial before proceeding with any restorative dental procedure, including dental bridges.

2. Bone Health

Gum disease can affect the underlying bone structure. A sufficient amount of healthy bone is essential for the stability of dental bridges. In severe cases, bone grafting may be considered to augment the bone.

3. Maintenance Commitment

Individuals with a history of gum disease should be committed to meticulous oral hygiene practices. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings become even more critical to prevent the recurrence of gum problems.

4. Collaboration Between Specialists

In complex cases involving both gum disease and the need for dental bridges, collaboration between a general dentist and a periodontist may be recommended. This ensures a comprehensive approach to oral health. Can I get a dental bridge if I have gum disease

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Can I get a dental bridge if I have gum disease?

1. Can I get a dental bridge if I have gum disease?

Dental bridges are generally not recommended if there is active gum disease. The priority is to address and control the gum disease before considering restorative procedures.

2. How is gum disease treated before getting a dental bridge?

Gum disease is typically treated with procedures such as scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to control infection. The goal is to create a healthy environment for successful bridge placement.

3. Will I need bone grafting if I have gum disease and want a dental bridge?

In cases where gum disease has affected the underlying bone, bone grafting may be considered to enhance bone health. This procedure aims to provide a stable foundation for the dental bridge.

4. Can I still get a dental bridge if I have experienced gum recession?

Gum recession can impact the stability of a dental bridge. The extent of recession and its effect on the supporting structures will be evaluated. Additional interventions may be needed to address gum recession before proceeding with a bridge.

5. Is it possible to get a dental bridge if I have lost teeth due to gum disease?

While gum disease can lead to tooth loss, dental bridges can still be an option if the remaining teeth are stable and healthy. The treatment plan will depend on the specific circumstances of each case.

6. How long does it take to treat gum disease before getting a dental bridge?

The duration of gum disease treatment varies based on the severity of the condition. In some cases, initial treatment may take a few weeks, but maintaining gum health is an ongoing process.

7. Can a dental bridge contribute to the recurrence of gum disease?

Proper oral hygiene practices, including regular cleaning around the bridge, are essential to prevent the recurrence of gum disease. Individuals with bridges should be committed to maintaining good oral health.

8. Should I consult a periodontist before getting a dental bridge with gum disease?

In cases of severe gum disease, consulting a periodontist, a specialist in gum issues, may be recommended. Collaboration between a general dentist and a periodontist ensures a comprehensive approach to treatment.

9. Will getting a dental bridge with gum disease be painful?

The placement of a dental bridge itself is not typically painful. However, if there is active gum disease, there may be discomfort associated with the treatment to address the gum issues.

10. Can I get a dental bridge if I have a history of gum disease but it’s currently under control?

If gum disease is under control, and there is no active infection, dental bridges may be considered. Regular monitoring and maintenance are essential to prevent the recurrence of gum problems.

Gum Disease and Dental Bridges

The relationship between gum disease and dental bridges requires careful consideration and a systematic approach to treatment. Individuals with gum disease can still explore dental bridges as a restorative option, but the priority is to address and control the periodontal condition. Collaboration between a general dentist and a periodontist, when needed, ensures a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan. Successful outcomes rely on maintaining optimal oral health, committing to regular dental check-ups, and following recommended oral hygiene practices. By understanding the interplay between gum disease and dental bridges, individuals can make informed decisions to restore their smiles effectively and maintain long-term oral well-being.

I cannot praise Dr Crowley and the team at Molesey Dental practise enough. One year ago I was in trouble with my teeth. A mix of age and embarrassment. I finally came to the point where I had no choice but to attend. I booked my appointment and to say I received complete professionalism is a understatement. I could write many lines of praise, but will keep it simple. Please don't hesitate!!! Make an appointment, be honest and you will not be judged whatsoever. The painless processes that are applied is certainly life changing. Huge thankyou to all the team at MDP. Thankyou. I finally smile with complete confidence once again!!!!

As an emergency, I booked an appointment with Dr Sharma who went above & beyond to ensure I trusted her and was comfortable with a different dentist. She did a fantastic and efficient job replacing my filling. The reception is also very friendly and professional. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After years of not seeing a dentist due to criticisms, critiques and bad relationships with all the ones I've had prior I was sceptical going in but knew that my dental health would one day catch up to me. So I went just before I went off to university. my dentist was Dr Puneet Nagpal who was very kind and considerate after learning I haven't been for a checkup for quite some time and he went through everything very thoroughly but was gentle with the tools and his words, he wasn't condescending or patronising or putting any blame on me. He told me that I needed to have half a dozen or so fillings filled and I told him about my deadline as I was off to university by the end of the month and he was able to book me in the following week for 2 rounds of fillings. We also had other talks about personal life and how much sugar and drinks can affect my teeth and he went out of his way to google and search for things that I would like and made some suggestions. During the fillings I had to excuse my self a couple of times due to an excess of water filling my mouth and having difficulty breathing, luckily he understood gave me time to compose myself and settle back in and I was able to wear some headphones to help distract myself from the noise of the drilling and from the pain. All 3 times I went to visit him he went above and beyond any dental experience I've had before and has made me care much more about my dental hygiene even more so and has made me feel comfortable with going back to the dentists as I would dread it before. Dr Nagpal has been one of if not the kindest person who has looked after me in any sort of medical visit I've so often needed in my life, I could not recommend him enough.
