Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. The process involves the surgical placement of implant fixtures into the jawbone, which serves as a foundation for artificial teeth. This raises an important question: Are dental implants considered oral surgery? In this article, we will delve into the details of dental implants, their surgical nature, and the broader context of oral surgery.

Understanding Dental Implants: Are They Considered Oral Surgery?

Dental implants have revolutionised the field of dentistry, providing a durable and natural-looking solution for individuals with missing teeth. The process of obtaining dental implants involves a surgical component, leading many to wonder: Are dental implants considered oral surgery? In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the world of dental implants, their surgical nature, and address common questions surrounding this transformative dental procedure.

The Fundamentals of Dental Implants

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth. Unlike traditional dentures or bridges, dental implants are anchored directly into the jawbone, mimicking the structure of natural teeth. They consist of three main components: the implant fixture, abutment, and prosthetic crown.

  1. Implant Fixture:
    • This is a small screw, usually made of titanium, that is surgically placed into the jawbone. It serves as an artificial tooth root and provides a stable foundation for the implant. Dental implants and oral surgery
  2. Abutment:
    • The abutment is a connector piece that is attached to the implant fixture. It protrudes above the gum line and serves as a connection point for the prosthetic crown.
  3. Prosthetic Crown:
    • The prosthetic crown is the visible part of the dental implant and is custom-designed to match the shape and colour of the natural teeth. It is securely attached to the abutment, completing the restoration.

The Surgical Aspect of Dental Implants

While the concept of dental implants may seem straightforward, the process involves a surgical procedure for implant placement. This surgical aspect is a key factor in answering the question of whether dental implants are considered oral surgery.

  1. Implant Placement Surgery:
    • The surgical procedure for dental implants involves making an incision in the gum tissue to expose the jawbone. The implant fixture is then precisely positioned and secured into the bone. Following placement, the gum is stitched back into place.
  2. Osseointegration:
    • After implant placement, a crucial phase called osseointegration occurs. This is the process where the implant fixture fuses with the surrounding jawbone, providing a strong and stable foundation for the prosthetic tooth.
  3. Abutment Placement:
    • Once osseointegration is complete, a second minor surgery may be performed to attach the abutment to the implant fixture. This involves reopening the gum to expose the implant and placing the abutment for later attachment of the prosthetic crown.
  4. Prosthetic Crown Attachment:
    • The final step is the attachment of the prosthetic crown to the abutment. This is a non-surgical phase where the custom-designed crown is securely affixed to the implant, completing the restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions: Are Dental Implants Considered Oral Surgery?

  1. Is getting dental implants a surgical procedure?
    • Yes, obtaining dental implants involves oral surgical procedure. The initial placement of the implant fixture into the jawbone constitutes oral surgery.
  2. How long does the dental implant surgery take?
    • The duration of dental implant surgery varies based on factors such as the number of implants, the complexity of the case, and the patient’s overall oral health. On average, the surgery can take anywhere from one to several hours. Are dental implants considered oral surgery
  3. Is dental implant surgery painful?
    • The surgical procedure for dental implants is typically performed under local anaesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort. While some postoperative discomfort is normal, pain is generally manageable with prescribed medications.
  4. What is osseointegration, and why is it important?
    • Osseointegration is the process by which the implant fixture fuses with the jawbone. This integration provides stability and strength to the implant, allowing it to function like a natural tooth root and support the prosthetic crown.
  5. How long does osseointegration take to complete?
    • Osseointegration usually takes several weeks to a few months to complete. The exact duration varies depending on factors such as the patient’s overall health, bone quality, and the location of the implant.
  6. Are there risks associated with dental implant surgery?
    • Like any surgical procedure, dental implant surgery carries some risks. Common risks include infection, damage to surrounding structures, and failure of osseointegration. However, with proper planning and skilled professionals, these risks are minimised.
  7. Can anyone get dental implants, or are there eligibility criteria?
    • While dental implants are a suitable option for many individuals, eligibility depends on factors such as overall health, jawbone density, and oral hygiene. A thorough evaluation by a dental professional is necessary to determine candidacy.
  8. What is the success rate of dental implant surgery?
    • Dental implant surgery has a high success rate, often exceeding 95%. Success depends on factors such as proper case selection, skilled surgical technique, and postoperative care. Regular follow-up visits are essential to monitor the implant’s health.
  9. How soon after dental implant surgery can I resume normal activities?
    • The timeline for resuming normal activities varies among individuals and depends on the complexity of the surgery. While some people can return to routine activities within a day or two, others may need more time for recovery.
  10. Is there an age limit for getting dental implants?
    • There is no strict age limit for dental implants. As long as a person is in good overall health and has sufficient jawbone density, dental implants can be a viable option. The decision is based on individual factors rather than age alone.

Postoperative Care and Considerations

  1. Recovery Period:
    • After dental implant surgery, a recovery period is necessary. Patients are advised to follow postoperative care instructions, which may include dietary restrictions, avoiding strenuous activities, and taking prescribed medications.
  2. Oral Hygiene Practices:
    • Proper oral hygiene is crucial for the success of dental implants. Patients should follow guidelines provided by the oral surgeon to ensure the surgical site remains clean and free from infection.
  3. Follow-Up Appointments:
    • Scheduled follow-up appointments with the oral surgeon are essential. These appointments allow for the monitoring of the healing process, assessment of osseointegration, and addressing any concerns or complications.

I cannot praise Dr Crowley and the team at Molesey Dental practise enough. One year ago I was in trouble with my teeth. A mix of age and embarrassment. I finally came to the point where I had no choice but to attend. I booked my appointment and to say I received complete professionalism is a understatement. I could write many lines of praise, but will keep it simple. Please don't hesitate!!! Make an appointment, be honest and you will not be judged whatsoever. The painless processes that are applied is certainly life changing. Huge thankyou to all the team at MDP. Thankyou. I finally smile with complete confidence once again!!!!

After years of not seeing a dentist due to criticisms, critiques and bad relationships with all the ones I've had prior I was sceptical going in but knew that my dental health would one day catch up to me. So I went just before I went off to university. my dentist was Dr Puneet Nagpal who was very kind and considerate after learning I haven't been for a checkup for quite some time and he went through everything very thoroughly but was gentle with the tools and his words, he wasn't condescending or patronising or putting any blame on me. He told me that I needed to have half a dozen or so fillings filled and I told him about my deadline as I was off to university by the end of the month and he was able to book me in the following week for 2 rounds of fillings. We also had other talks about personal life and how much sugar and drinks can affect my teeth and he went out of his way to google and search for things that I would like and made some suggestions. During the fillings I had to excuse my self a couple of times due to an excess of water filling my mouth and having difficulty breathing, luckily he understood gave me time to compose myself and settle back in and I was able to wear some headphones to help distract myself from the noise of the drilling and from the pain. All 3 times I went to visit him he went above and beyond any dental experience I've had before and has made me care much more about my dental hygiene even more so and has made me feel comfortable with going back to the dentists as I would dread it before. Dr Nagpal has been one of if not the kindest person who has looked after me in any sort of medical visit I've so often needed in my life, I could not recommend him enough.
